Teaching about waste disposal through an interactive game

Dump It Right was made during a week-long program at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design’s summer school program which focused on designing solutions to help achieve the SDGs.
Dump It Right is an educational interactive gamified project aimed at teaching employees at the UNCity building on how to dispose of waste correctly according to their waste disposal guidelines of plastic, paper and trash.
Materials used:
-
Makey Makey software
-
Processing
-
Sublime Text
-
Makey Makey board
-
Aluminium foil
-
Alligator clips
-
USB cable
-
Projector
-
Wall for interactive display

Players use a phone as a remote control to click on waste products projected onto a wall, and drag and drop them into their respective bins.
A meter on the screen indicates whether the player has made the correct choice or not, and a score is kept to encourage competition and engagement.

Dump it Right can be played by people of all ages and backgrounds, and can be adapted and scaled up for a variety of settings such as schools, community centres and public spaces.
